Daily Insurance Education: Does Medicare Cover Hearing Aids and Dialysis in 2026? What California Families Should Know
Does Medicare cover hearing aids in 2026? If you are turning 65, helping a parent in Merced County, or managing a new medical diagnosis, you may be hearing conflicting answers. The short version is clear: Original Medicare does not cover hearing aids, but it may cover certain diagnostic exams. Dialysis coverage follows a different set of rules.
Here is what California families should know.
Original Medicare does not cover hearing aids
Under Original Medicare: Part A and Part B: hearing aids are not covered in 2026. Medicare also does not pay for routine hearing exams or exams performed to fit or adjust a hearing aid.
That means you generally pay 100% of the cost for:
- Hearing aids
- Hearing-aid fitting exams
- Programming and routine adjustments
- Batteries and related accessories
However, Part B may cover a diagnostic hearing or balance exam when a doctor orders it to investigate a medical concern: such as dizziness, vertigo, sudden hearing loss, or balance problems.
After meeting the 2026 Part B deductible of $283, you typically pay 20% coinsurance of the Medicare-approved amount for a covered diagnostic exam. A hospital outpatient copayment may also apply.
Medicare Advantage may offer hearing benefits
Many Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans offer benefits that Original Medicare does not, including hearing exams and an allowance toward hearing aids. But these benefits are not identical from plan to plan.
A plan may limit:
- The hearing-aid brands or models you can choose
- The hearing-care providers you may use
- How often you can receive hearing aids
- Your allowance or copayment
- Whether fitting and follow-up services are included
Always check the plan’s Summary of Benefits and provider network. An allowance that sounds generous may still leave you with significant costs if your preferred audiologist or device is outside the plan’s network.
Medigap generally does not cover hearing aids. Medicare Supplement plans help pay certain deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance for services Original Medicare already covers. Because Original Medicare excludes hearing aids, Medigap usually does not add that benefit.

How dialysis and ESRD coverage works
End-stage renal disease (ESRD) does not create hearing-aid coverage. These are separate Medicare benefits.
For dialysis, Medicare generally covers:
- Outpatient dialysis under Part B
- Home dialysis equipment and supplies
- Home dialysis training for you and your caregiver
- Related doctors’ services, laboratory services, and certain medications
- Inpatient hospital dialysis under Part A during a covered hospital stay
For covered outpatient and home dialysis services, you generally pay the 2026 Part B deductible of $283, followed by 20% coinsurance of the Medicare-approved amount. Having both Part A and Part B is important for receiving the full range of ESRD and dialysis benefits.
Medicare’s official resources explain more about dialysis services and supplies and hearing aids.
Coverage comparison: hearing aids and dialysis
| Coverage type | Hearing aids and fitting | Diagnostic hearing exam | Dialysis coverage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original Medicare | Not covered; you pay 100% | Part B may cover when medically ordered; deductible and 20% coinsurance generally apply | Part B generally covers outpatient and home dialysis; Part A covers inpatient services |
| Medicare Advantage | Often offers an allowance or fixed copay, but limits and networks vary | Usually covered according to the plan’s rules | Covers Medicare-covered dialysis, with plan-specific costs and network requirements |
| Medigap | Generally not covered | May help with Medicare cost-sharing after Medicare pays | May help pay some Medicare cost-sharing for covered dialysis |
A local example from Atwater
Consider Mr. Hernandez, an Atwater senior, who recently began dialysis and also noticed difficulty hearing conversations with his grandchildren. He assumed that because Medicare was helping with dialysis, it would also pay for hearing aids.
His situation illustrates an important distinction: ESRD can qualify someone for Medicare dialysis benefits, but it does not expand Medicare’s hearing-aid coverage. His advisor would need to review whether he has Original Medicare, a Medicare Advantage plan, or Medigap: and then compare his hearing options, provider networks, and expected out-of-pocket costs.
What about Share of Cost Medi-Cal and PPO vs EPO?
Families sometimes combine Medicare questions with other insurance terms. Share of Cost Medi-Cal is a monthly medical deductible: not a monthly premium. You may need to pay or incur a certain amount of medical expenses before Medi-Cal begins paying for covered services.
That is separate from provider-network questions such as PPO vs EPO:
- A PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) generally offers out-of-network coverage at a higher cost.
- An EPO (Exclusive Provider Organization) generally requires you to use in-network providers, except for emergencies.
These concepts do not change whether Original Medicare covers hearing aids or dialysis. They affect how you access care and what you may pay.
Review your options before the 2027 plan year
The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 through December 7, 2026, for coverage changes effective in 2027. This is a helpful time to review:
- Hearing-aid allowances and provider networks
- Dialysis facility participation
- Prescription coverage
- Maximum out-of-pocket limits
- Whether your doctors and specialists remain in-network
